LOVE IS

By Sharon Stone
A Fenton Township couple have been
building their life together since they met
in the eighth grade. After postponing their
nuptials a couple of times due to COVID,
they married in October 2021 and are
expecting their rst baby this spring.
Meet Ellen and Philip Stair, both 27.
Eighth grade classes are known to
take trips to Washington, D.C. Ellen
Sage, who was attending St. John School
in Fenton, and Philip Stair, who was
attending St. John Vianney School in
Flint, found themselves traveling to D.C.
on a bus together with their classes. Ellen
knew of Philip from sports and said she
thought he was quite handsome. She
could tell by the way he was behaving on
that trip that he was interested in her but
she was still apprehensive. Ellen’s mother
was a chaperone on this trip and also had
the opportunity to meet Philip.
Back from their trip, he
asked her out and they
went to the movies. She
much preferred his
behavior once they
returned home and she
began to really like
him. They started going
out. She said once in the
beginning of ninth grade
they broke up for about two
weeks but even then, they felt as
though they were meant to be and got
back together.
Ellen attended Fenton High School
and Philip went to Powers Catholic.
They saw each other all of the time but
still had friends from their own schools.
Both played sports and stayed busy. They
attended countless homecoming dances
and proms as a couple during their high
school years.
After graduation they both attended
Michigan State University. Philip was
goalie for MSU’s soccer team and
Ellen was busy with her own clubs and
studies. Philip graduated with a degree in
economics and is a project manager for
Miller Industries in Fenton Township.
After graduation, Ellen was accepted to
a physician’s assistant school in Florida
where she lived for nearly three years.
Their relationship became long distance
during that period but remained strong.
Through all their years of schooling,
Ellen and Philip continued to plan their
future together. They are both Catholic,
both valued higher education and had
faith that everything would work out.
Although they had disagreements now
and then like any other couple, they knew
they wanted to spend their lives together
and eventually have a family.
With a year left in PA school, they
nally got engaged. Philip relocated to
Florida to oversee a project in the area for
Miller Industries and they set a wedding
date for Oct. 3, 2020.
Then COVID hit.
Ellen’s schooling was
interrupted, her clinicals
stopped. They returned
to Michigan and kept
trying to plan the
wedding that they had
always dreamt of. They
saved their money and
started planning to build
a home. They rescheduled
their wedding for February 2021,
but again, COVID gathering limitations
squashed their plans.
“We wanted everyone we love to be
there,” Ellen said. Finally, their special
day became a reality on Oct. 22, 2021
when they were married at St. John the
Evangelist Catholic Church in Fenton. “It
was the best day ever, totally 100% the
best day ever.”
Ellen said that the timing eventually
worked out perfectly and all their loved
ones were able to attend the wedding.
They honeymooned in Maui, Hawaii.
Ellen is now a PA at Fenton Medical

their teenage years and COVID delays, Fenton

Center and they have moved into their
new home in Fenton Township.
Looking back at the wedding delays,
Ellen said they just adjusted. “Everything
happens for a reason,” she said. “We
knew we were going to get married, there

were no ifs. God always has a plan.”
With them meeting in eighth grade
and Ellen being the oldest of four
children, her younger siblings grew up
with Philip too. “It’s very special to us,
all the family memories,” she said.

Your bridal
Here’s what you
really need to start
your life together
Are you really going to use that
panini press you registered for, or that
bread machine you
thought you had
to have when you
signed up for your
bridal registry?
After you’ve been
married for a few years,
you’ll know exactly
what gifts have been the
workhorses in your kitchen, and which
items you should’ve left on the shelf.
It’s very important to give extra
thought to the items you put on your
registry, because this is the one time in
your life that people will be buying you
big gifts … and lots of them.
One bride from Kitchn.com who
looked back on the items she registered
for 10 years before has ve items
she is very glad to
have registered for,
and what she’d do
dierently today:
1. DISHES
Register for at least
eight, or preferably 12,
sets of dishes in a pattern
or color you love, with white being
the most versatile for all occasions and
holidays.
Wedding registry do's and don'ts
Register shortly after your engagement,
because people will be buying engagement
gifts, in addition to wedding gifts.
Register at more than one place. This
way, your guests will have a variety of
gifting options. Try to include at least one
big-name retailer, so your out-of-town
guests can easily shop for you.
Select gifts at a variety of price points.
Yes, you can register for that luxury
bedding or a stand mixer, but make sure
there is a full range of items so guests can
select gifts within their means.
Connect your registry with your wedding
website. That way, your guests will have
easy access to your registry.
Feel free to keep adding items. People
will be buying gifts for you throughout
your wedding, and some, even after for
special occasions. If you keep your registry
current, you’ll make it easier for people
looking for gift ideas.
You can have a less traditional registry,
like one for gardening equipment or
camping gear, but also include a traditional
list for people who feel more comfortable
with a few classic options.
You can also give a signal that gifts of
money are welcome, but that would be
done by word of mouth, not listed as part
of a registry. Some websites also facilitate
cash gifts for saving money for a down
payment on a home, so do your research
carefully on setting up your registry.
Don’t plan to use your wedding gifts
until after your wedding. On the very off
chance that your wedding date would be
canceled, long-standing etiquette states
that wedding gifts are to be returned to
the giver. You can’t do that if it’s already
scratched and used.
Remember to send a thank you note for
each gift you receive. If you send a card
as soon as the gift arrives, it will make it
easier to keep up with, and will also help
with your workload after the honeymoon.
2. FLATWARE
Pick a really great set that you
will use for years and love. Register
for at least 12 if you plan to do any
entertaining. Ditto for the dishes above.
3. BASIC COOKWARE SET
Register for premium cookware,
because there are reasons it’s worth
the extra price. You can skip the super
expensive pre-packaged set and create
your own small collection where every
piece makes it into high rotation.
4. CRYSTAL WINE GLASSES
Pick a pattern that you know you can
live with and enjoy for years, and make
sure to register for six more than you
think you need!
5. MINI FOOD PROCESSOR
You can work a Cuisinart 3-cup food
processor for years, until it totally gives
up on you a decade later. You might
want a larger food processor, but the
“little guy” is super easy to use and
clean, and lasts practically forever.

Wedding planning is a unique experience
unlike any endeavor most couples will ever
encounter. Much eort goes into planning a
wedding, and that includes building a budget
that ensures the big day will be fun without
breaking the bank.
Most couples planning a wedding have never
tied the knot before, so it can be dicult to
determine a reasonable amount to spend. It’s
easy to go overboard when planning a wedding,
and couples may nd their list of wants and,
consequently, their expenses, growing as
they get into the weeds of wedding planning.
Though it might require some dicult
decisions, couples can keep these tips in mind
so they can build a wedding budget that won’t
land them in debt after saying, “I do.”
Determine funding. The days when a
bride’s parents would nance the wedding
entirely on their own are largely a thing of
the past. According to a recent WeddingWire
Newlywed Report, parents now pay for
52% of wedding expenses. As couples begin
establishing a wedding budget, it’s imperative
that they rst determine who, if anyone, will
be helping them nance the big day. Fifty-two
percent of wedding expenses is a signicant
amount of money, but in that scenario, couples
will still need to come up with roughly half
of the money needed to fund their weddings.
Couples without substantial savings may be
forced to cut back in order to avoid beginning
their life as a married couple in debt.

BUDGET
Continued from Page 19
Make a list of potential
expenses. Location will be a
signicant factor when determining
potential expenses. For example,
a 2022 ValuePenguin analysis of
data from The Wedding Report
found that the average wedding in
Massachusetts cost roughly $30,500
in 2020, while couples tying the knot
in Arkansas spent around $12,500
on their weddings. With such wide
uctuations, it’s important that
couples get an accurate estimate of
how much it may cost them to get
married in a given city. Couples
who met in a city and still live in a
city but grew up in a suburb might
save a considerable sum by getting
married in their hometowns. Compare
and contrast prices in locales you’re
considering, and then build your
budget accordingly. This can help you
avoid sticker shock and going over
budget. Notable expenses to budget
include the venue, attire (i.e., wedding
dress and tuxedo rental), hairstyle and
makeup, entertainment, photography,
and transportation, among others.
Make a list of what’s most
important. Most couples will have to
compromise in order to avoid taking
on debt to nance their weddings.
An earnest discussion about what’s
most important to each person can
ensure you both get what you want.
Each person can make a list of their
priorities, ranking them from most
important to least important. Once
lists are shared, couples can see where
their priorities converge and where
they diverge. Any items that rank low
on each person’s list of priorities can
be aorded less funding, while those
that are high on each list can take up
more of the budget, if necessary.
Commit to a limit before
spending a dime. Committing to a
limit before spending a dime can help
couples keep wedding costs more
manageable. Once that number is
dened, couples can then work within
its parameters, which can make
potentially dicult decisions a little
easier by narrowing options at a time
when options can seem endless.
A well-planned budget can be just
what couples need to begin married
life on strong nancial footing.

Pets are family, and if you want to
include them in your wedding, there
are multiple ways to make sure it’s
classy and fun.
First, check with the venue and
make sure they’re pet friendly. Figure
out where in the vicinity they allow
animals, and scope out where you’ll
have someone take your pet to do their
business before and after the ceremony.
You don’t want them going “No. 2”
where the guests will be or be able to see.
Arrange for multiple family members
and friends to take turns watching your
pet. Your pet must be comfortable with
them and able to relax and stay quiet.
Your pet could be the “pup of honor.”
Have a bridesmaid or groomsmen walk
down the aisle with the pet on a leash
to stand with the wedding party during
the ceremony. Have fun decorating the
leash to t the wedding theme.
Consider making your pet “the ower
dog.” They can carry a basket of ower
petals, or they can walk down the aisle
wearing a ower collar.
If you want to give them a more
important job, they can also be the ring
bearer. Put the rings in a small bag or
box and tie it to their collar. Trust one
of the bridesmaids or groomsmen to
retrieve the rings.
If your pet is more erratic and can’t
be trusted with these errands, they can
simply be walked down the aisle to
stand or sit with the wedding party.
Deciding if they’ll stick around for
the reception is a dierent matter. With
all the activity of food, music, lights and

Weddings
are among the most complex
events many people will ever plan.
Couples often try to go the extra
mile in an eort to make the day
memorable for themselves and
their guests. That pressure can
make a wedding day feel a little
frenzied. Thankfully, there are
various ways to ensure the vibe of
the big day is happy and not hectic.
Hire a wedding planner/
coordinator
Leaving the nitty gritty to a
professional wedding planner
takes a lot of pressure off of
couples. The renowned wedding
resource The Knot says wedding
planners are clued into everything
there is to know about a wedding
and they can be tapped to take care
of just about anything on couples’
to-do list.
Consider a package deal
All-inclusive resorts are popular
vacation spots because variables
like entertainment, lodging, food,
drinks, and more is all taken care
of, leaving vacationers with little
to do other than show up and
relax. Couples can apply that same
approach on their wedding day.
Host the ceremony and reception
at the same site, which takes the
potentially
problematic issue of
getting guests to and fro out of
the equation. Some venues may
even provide in-house vendors
like photographers and orists.
Such vendors’ familiarity with
the venue reduces the risk of
surprises that can derail wedding
day schedules.
Pick your priorities
Avoid getting bogged down
on a million details by making
a list of your priorities when
planning. Couples can revisit this
list a couple of days before their
wedding so they remember what’s
most important to them on the
big day. This refresher can ensure
couples don’t get too concerned if
minor issues arise during their big
day, helping them remain calm and
keeping a focus on all the fun to
be had during the day.
It’s easy for couples to feel a little
overwhelmed on their wedding
day. Some simple strategies can
take the hectic out of couples’
wedding day and ensure they keep
their focus on one another and their
loved ones.

Brides- and grooms-to-be select people
who are near and dear to their hearts to be
special parts of their momentous days. So
the chance to participate in a friend’s or
family members wedding is a great honor.
A wedding party plays a key role in both
the ceremony and reception. Participants
do everything from helping couples
make decisions to addressing invitations
to providing emotional support. As so
much is asked of the wedding party —
particularly the maid/matron of honor and
bridesmaids — it’s customary to bestow
gifts on those people who devoted so much
time and eort to the wedding. These
potential bridesmaid gifts can serve as
a thoughtful and unique to way to thank
bridesmaids for all that they’ve done.
• Photo books: Gift the bridesmaids
with photo books of carefully curated
photographs taken throughout the
wedding planning experience. Pepper the
books with other photos, such as images of
you with the bridesmaids at fun moments
throughout your lives together.
• Portrait wine or champagne glasses:
Beverage glasses customized with the
bridesmaids’ likenesses painted or printed
onto them make for great gifts. Bridesmaids
will enjoy sipping their favorite drinks in
special glasses for years to come.
• Personalized phone cases: Who
doesn’t rely on their mobile phones
these days? Treat your bridesmaids to
something special with colorful phone
cases with their names embossed or
printed on the outsides.
• Wellness or spa gift card: After all
of the running around for the wedding,
bridesmaids may need a little extra
pampering. Gift cards to a local spa can
t the bill.
• Birthstone jewelry: Necklaces, rings
or earrings become that much more special
when they’re customized to the recipients.
Purchase jewelry with your bridesmaids’
birthstones so they’ll be as unique as each
woman.
• Friendship bracelets: Gift each
bridesmaid with beaded friendship
bracelets that features all of the ladies’
initials. Be sure to keep one for yourself,
and you all can enjoy nights on the town
showcasing your special bracelets.
• Monogrammed robes or purses: A
customized pocketbook, robe or another
item bridesmaids will use every day can
make for an extra-special item that will
serve as a daily reminder of how much
you appreciate them.
Bridesmaid gifts are a great way for
brides to thank their bridesmaids for all
that they’ve done to make a couple’s
wedding day special.

Few things document weddings more
eectively than photographs. Carefully
curated wedding albums and portraits
hung on walls serve as daily reminders
of a couple's special day.
Photography is often left in the
very qualied hands of professional
photographers. However, couples can
pitch in to make their photos really pop.
These picture pointers from industry
insiders can help couples put their best
smile forward.
Leave ample time
A carefully orchestrated timeline
can ensure photos are the best they
can be. Why? Because a couple who
is relaxed and not overwhelmed will
notice that attitude translates to their
photographs. When planning wedding
timelines, couples should leave ample
opportunities for getting dressed,
chatting with the wedding party and
going through various photography
settings to grab great photos, advise the
experts at Martha Stewart.
Put together a short list
The photographer will have his or her
ideas of which shots to cover, but a couple
with specic goals in mind should relay
that information to their photographer.
For example, if a grandparent is getting
up in years, request some solo photos
of that person so you can look back on
happy times together. Certain couples
want to be snapped posing with a
beloved pet. Putting that on the list helps
ensure it will happen.
Play your style safe
A wedding day is not a time for
the bride or groom to try a dramatic
new style, according to photographer
Amanda Lamb. Resist the urge for a
daring cut or color. It’s also likely not
the place to try out new facial hair or
heavy makeup. A couple unaccustomed
to the way they look may be shy in front
of the camera.
Enlist a family photo
coordinator
If the photographer does not have his or
her own assistant, recruit someone who is
assertive to help wrangle everyone for the
family shots. Attempt to get family photos
when family members are relaxed but not
too far rumpled by dancing or having a
good time.
Delve into the details
Prepare wedding details, like gowns,
shoes, accessories, etc., in advance
to save time once the photographer
arrives, suggests Desi Mendoza, a pro
from Dez and Tam Photography. Invest
in a beautiful hanger for the wedding
gown as well, because you may want
to photograph that on its own.
Learn to pose
Couples can practice posing in
front of mirrors to get a feel for body
positions that put them in their best
light. A photographer's advice in regard
to posture is invaluable as well. Create
space between arms and the body and
learn how to angle the body so you look
your best.
Photos will capture wedding day
memories forever. Couples can put
themselves in the best positions for
success by following some photography
guidelines.

Here are some
things to address as
you begin planning
Many couples preparing for their
trip down the aisle follow the familiar
sentiments expressed by Dorothy in
“The Wizard of Oz.” Such couples feel
“there’s no place like home” when hosting
a wedding ceremony or reception.
There are many benets to hosting
a wedding at home. Homes often hold
couples’ most cherished memories, and
hosting a backyard celebration or an
intimate indoor ceremony at your own
home or the abode of a loved one can be
a cost-eective way to have a good time.
Here are some tips to help couples
navigate hosting an at-home wedding.
ASSESS YOUR SPACE
The average home is not equipped to
handle hundreds of guests, wait sta,
caterers, and parked cars. Concessions in
regard to comfort and safety will have to
be made when drawing up the guest list.
The wedding resource The Knot advises
the general rule is six- to 10 square-feet
of oor space per guest for row seating.
You’ll probably need even more space for
buet tables, seating and a dance oor.
You will likely need to temporarily
move furniture to comfortably to t
everyone indoors — or rent a large
enough tent for a backyard wedding.
BOOK AN OFFICIANT EARLY
Conrm with an ociant that they
can oversee the wedding proceedings at
your home. Many religious ocials are
not able to perform ceremonies outside
of a place of worship.
LEARN IF IT’S LEGAL
Certain municipalities may require
permits for parking on street, noise past
a certain hour, closing of streets, and
much more. Do your research. You may
need to coordinate parking at a nearby
lot (like a school closed on the weekend)
and shuttle people to your home.
HIRE A CLEANING SERVICE
It’s important to present a clean,
inviting space when hosting a wedding
at home. A cleaning service will conduct

a thorough cleaning before and after
the festivities, freeing up your time for
last-minute tasks or to embark on your
honeymoon.
CONSULT WITH AN
INSURANCE CARRIER
Inquire if having such a large party at
home is covered by your homeowners
insurance policy, particularly if
your home is damaged or someone
gets injured during the festivities.
Supplemental liability insurance or
an umbrella policy may oer greater
protection.
Weddings at home can be a unique
opportunity for couples who love the
comfort and familiarity of their homes.

me out on a date, he realized a

a breakfast date. A year later, he takes me

and he scooted out of the

It’ll be 9 years in
June. I still interrupt
him.
