December 2021
First Steps to Career-Tech School or College:
TO DO:
Work with a parent to esmate your potenal nancial aid using FAFSA4caster at fafsa.gov and save for col-
lege.
Take challenging classes in core academic subjects. Most colleges require four years of English, at least three
years of social studies (history, civics, geography, economics, etc.), three years of math, and three years of
science. Many require two years of a foreign language. Round out your course load with classes in computer
science and the arts.
Stay involved in school- or community-based acvies that interest you or let you explore career interests.
Consider working or volunteering. Remember that its quality—not quanty—that counts.
Talk to your Maplewood and home school counselor and other mentors about educaon aer high school.
Your counselors can answer quesons about what classes to take in high school, how to sign up for stand-
ardized tests, and where to get money for college.

FSA ID (Federal Student Aid ID) hps://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/index.htm
The FSA ID allows students and parents (both are required) to idenfy themselves electronically to access FSA Web sites. An FSA ID
is made up of a username and password and can be used to log into FAFSA on the Web. While you are not required to have an FSA
ID to complete and submit a FAFSA on the Web applicaon, it is the fastest way to sign your applicaon and have it processed. It is
also the only way to access or correct your informaon online, or to pre-ll a FAFSA on the Web applicaon with informaon from
your previous years FAFSA. If you do not already have an FSA ID, you can create your FSA ID here: hps://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/
index.htm
FAFSA: Free Applicaon for Federal Student Aid www.fafsa.gov
Compleng and subming the FAFSA
®
form is free and quick, and it gives you access to the largest source of nancial aid to pay for
college or career school. In addion, many states and colleges use your FAFSA data to determine your eligibility for state and
school aid, and some private nancial aid providers may use your FAFSA informaon to determine whether you qualify for their
aid. For the 2020-2021 year, you can apply between Oct. 1, 2020, and June 30, 2021. However, there are a few federal student aid
programs that have limited funds, so be sure to apply as soon as you can once the FAFSA form is available for the year youll be
aending school.
Before starng to complete the FAFSA make sure you have the following:
FSA ID (see below) to sign in.
Your Social Security number.
Your Alien Registraon number (if you are not a US cizen).
Your federal income tax returns, W-2s, and other records of money earned. (Note: You may be able to transfer your federal tax
return informaon into your FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.).
Bank statements and records of investments (if applicable).
Records of untaxed income (if applicable).
